How to use STEP

The STEP framework in Physical Education is an easy way to understand how you can manage your lessons to make sure everyone is getting the most engaging experience possible. It allows you to modify elements of  your activity to better meet the needs of either the individual pupil or group of pupils to keep everyone on task and appropriately challenged.

Space: Where is the activity happening?

Adjust the space by increasing or decreasing the area in which a task is to be performed or by changing the distance or areas in which pupils can score points.

Task: What exactly is happening?

Adjust the task by changing the demands or the rules of the activity or adjust the way pupils score points or measure success. You can change the number of times the pupil is asked to repeat the task; give different teaching cues, or simply change  the direction/level/pathway of movement or the length of time they have to complete the task.

Equipment: What are the tools being used?

Activities can be changed easily by introducing different equipment. This is a great way to create individualised challenges for pupils working within a group activity or to keep the progressions flowing.

People: Who is involved?

Adjust the people involved by having pupils work alone; with a partner; bigger teams; smaller teams; as leader or follower; on different activities, or in a small group and don’t be scared to mix them - there is nothing wrong with ability setting your games, but facing different challengers is a great way to keep everyone interested.
