PE Lesson Tips

The more you deliver these PE lessons, the more confident you’ll become and the more the pupils will enjoy them. Here are just a few tips to help you.

Information Line

We find it really useful to have what we call an ‘information line’ in our lessons. This is where the pupils line up at the start of the lesson and where they go when you want them all in one place so that you can give them new information. In a lot of situations you can progress activities without bringing them back to the information line, but it’s helpful if you want to move things on, show them a new demonstration, or if you need to reset the area. Use it consistently and we promise it will help you control your lessons.

Cones - Your new best friend.

Colour code your cones wherever possible. It might sound like a very small thing, but trust us, it makes it easier to explain areas and drills to pupils if you do.

This team are on the white pitch; this team is working in the red zone; please run from the yellow cone to the blue cone etc.

Cones are your best friend in PE and they give you structure, so use them wisely!

Cool Downs

Our advice is to ALWAYS do the cool downs that are included in the lesson plans – it’s very tempting to give the game you are playing a little longer, but cool downs have lots of benefits, especially if your lesson has been high intensity and lots of fun (as it should be!)

The cool downs bring the pupils heart rate down, reduce the pace of their movements and essentially get them back into a calm disposition to re-enter school and prepare for the following lesson.

Arm Signals

The pupils can be spread out over quite a large area in PE and lessons can be quite loud, so we’ve come up with a non-verbal way of letting them know what we want them to do. If they see you with one arm in the air they know to stop what they are doing and listen where they are. If they see you with two arms in the air they know to go back to the information line. It only takes 1 or 2 pupils to see you, act on the instruction and it spreads to the rest of the class really quickly. Give it a try with your class
